The objective of this study was to compare the amount of the active compounds in crude extracts of roots of Pueraria mirifica from Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Kanjanjburi at the ages of 3 to 14 years old determined from the annual rings, and the unknown age of the root samples of Butea superba from Chiang Mai and Kanjanaburi. The active compounds in
the extracts by organic solvent were determined from the finger prints by HPLC in comparing to the standard puerarin, daizein and genistein. Pueraria mirifica from Chiang Mai at the age of 6 years old gave the highest amount of the active compounds of 290, 89 and 9 mg per kilogram of the dried powdered root, respectively. Ages of the plants that were less than or more than 6 years old appeared to contain less amount of the active compounds. Butea superba from Chiang Mai had the highest amount of the active compounds. Puerarin contents in Butea superba were less where as daizein and genistein were more than in Pueraria mirifica.
