Kwao Keur is used in Thai traditional medicine for rejuvenation. Its tuberous root contains phytoestrogen, such as genistein, genistin, daidzein, daidzin, coumestrol, miroestrol, and deoxymiroestrol. Pueraria candollei var. candollei and P. candollei var. mirifica was used as the source of Kwao Keur.
Genetic variation among sixteen plants of P. candollei var. candollei and P. candollei var. mirifica collected from three areas of Thailand was analyzed using eleven oligonucleotide primers by RAPD method. The number of polymorphic/monomorphic bands among the pairwise combinations of the plants and the total number of bands were determined to categorize all the plants in different groups of similarity and discrimination of the varieties of Pueraria candollei. Furthermore, secondary metabolites of the tuberous roots of both varieties were profiled using LCMS spectroscopy. Puerarin was identified as a major component of the tuberous root extracts.
